Destroying the value of oil

From the ever-fascinating blog Ares, in a post about how comments on how energy (read oil) will shape future defense policy delivered at the 44th annual Government Electronics and Information Technology Association conference:

Indeed, McCain adviser James Woolsey – a former CIA director – told attendees that the United States must destroy oil as a strategic commodity in order to gain energy freedom. … For instance, salt was once a commodity over which countries fought wars, Woolsey noted. The advent of refrigeration destroyed salt’s strategic dominance. “We need to do that to oil,” he said. “We need to do it as rapidly and as devastatingly as possible.”

I am sure our North Sea and Middle Eastern allies are thrilled to hear we plan to devastate the value of their central natural resource, but Woolsey’s dead-on right.
